residencies

Carol Moses has participated in three juried residencies – SÍM in Reykjavik, Iceland; LIA in Leipzig, Germany; and World of Co in Sofia, Bulgaria. She also undertook a self-directed residency in Lerwick, Shetland. For Moses, residencies present a compelling intersection of new and international colleagues, the stimulation of different environments, with the structure of a place to stay, and the useful time constraint of completing a project for exhibition.

Her paintings become influenced by this new set of inputs, emerging from the emotions, weather, food, cultural environment, and the people she encounters. Moses also arranges meetings with locals via international travel-friendship groups, to make photographic portraits and interviews of them, or to get contact with others in the community to participate. She also invited individuals she met after arriving in the local areas. The nature of these portrait projects allows Moses a rich and nuanced connection with the places itself, by meeting and talking in depth to a wide range of people there.
